best video format to use?
using adobe premiere on a mac
what would be the best format to put a movie on a CD? it is unknown what the OS and software will be on the target computer, which will ultimately play the movie. it’s not a full-length movie, just a promotional video. not sure on the exact length
I’ve googled for it but there are many conflicting answers. I trust the OT folks…..mostly…..so can someone give me a quick run down on which formats would be best and why?
put multiple formatted versions of the video on the CD? i have no idea what would be "best" universally.
I’d think something like MPEG-2 would be the most universal format.
You said you didn’t know the length, but do you think it would possible to include multiple formats? Something like a combo of H.264 for Mac folks and WMV for Windows folks would be great.
WMV was already tried, and PC we used it on couldn’t play it for whatever reason. so we were hoping to find a more universal format.

For H.264 to play on a Windows PC, they need to have Quicktime (or another suitable codec like ffmpeg or coreavc) installed.

that’s why multiple formats would be best, you’re right. I just don’t know if that’ll be possible until tomorrow. what can play MPEG-2?
I know quite a few people who despise Quicktime. It really doesn’t run all that well on Windows.
What kind of people is the disc going to be given to? Are they fairly computer savvy, or are they more like the type that barely know how to check their email and browse the internet?
Not a bad option. Could also be done with XviD or DivX.
i figure if they don’t have the codecs already, might as well give ‘em most everything they’ll ever need.
CCCP? is it just a program with which to install the H.264 codec?

wait… you couldn’t play a WMV file on a Windows PC? what version of Windows was it? how did you save the file? i can’t imagine not being able to play WMV on windows.
neither can I, but that’s what happened.
I think we’re going to try and put 3 different formats on the disc if it will fit:
1) H.264
2) MPEG-4 Xvid
3) MPEG-1
dv-avi? 100% uncompressed
if its < 3-4 minutes it should be fine, might have to be transferred to the computer to play wihtout hiccups though
its about 5 min to a gigabyte for dv footage

Quicktime is terrible.
combined community codec pack. it’s basically most every codec you will need.
I don’t agree with including codecs. Since this is a promo video I doubt people want to be installing shit to their computers to watch it.
I would try MPEG-2 or leave the video as uncompressed avi
