Excel Problems
I’m taking an online computer class & I’ll admit upfront that I am not very good with Excel. (Obviously…that’s why I’m posting this thread.) I would appreciate any help someone could give me. I’m stuck on an assignment (the hardest & last assignment for the Excel section) for this class & have been beating my head on my desk for the last hour & a half. Anyway…my problem is when I’m trying to enter in formulas. Ex: (b2 * (b3 / (1 – b6))…I’ve tried typing the formula WITH spaces & WITHOUT…about 900 times! WHY is nothing showing up in my totals?! Does it have something to do with absolute cell references or relative cell references or some shit?! I have re-read that section in the chapter about 5 times. I’m STUCK & about to give up & email my instructor or a fellow classmate for help. Nothing like procrastinating! Thanks in advance for your help! I would really appreciate it.
P.S. Thanks Eric for suggesting I try for help here. I owe ya 1.
Keep that up & I’ll take it back….
P.S. People like you who are just going to laugh or make fun of my problem, need not waste their fucking time or mine. ‘Kthanks.
No spaces and put an = behind it.
At least I think that’s how it works. I’m in Ubuntu and don’t feel like rebooting into Windows to try it.
what does show up? do you get garbage output? does it give a number, but just the wrong one?
as far as i can tell, the contents of the cell should be:
=b2*(b3/(1-b6))
in your post you had 3 ( and only 2 ) plus you didn’t have the = at the beginning.

I forgot to type the = in my post, but I HAVE been including it in the formula for the assignment. Wow. I have no idea how it worked that time, but it did! It looks like you typed the whole formula in without spaces & I swear I tried it like that (& with spaces) at least 100 times! Thank you so much for your help!!! I really do appreciate it. Now I can only hope the rest of the assignment goes smoothly. I still don’t know why it wasn’t working for me before. Oh & I wasn’t getting garbage output; nothing was happening; no #s, no totals, nothing…Hey man. Thanks again!

i wouldn’t say this is a "do my homework" question. this is someone who is obviously trying to get it done on her own, but is stuck and is asking for assistance. all either of us gave her was add or take away a parenthesis and add an equal sign.
now, how about them nudes? lollers
Better send him noodz… you know, to show your gratitude.
Fail.

. The = equal sign was never a problem. I always had it there. Apparently it was a problem with the spacing, which I tried several different ways before. I dunno. But thanks again!!!!
Fuck you. Doncare. Not important. I got my point across.
Nudes?
You first.
do it
I couldn’t be so cruel.
Ok. The real thing will do. I think.
It wasn’t the spacing – Excel doesn’t care about how many spaces you use.
For each open parenthesis, you need a corresponding close parenthesis.
Actually, it was…But I got it worked out.
Thanks.
I’ll make a correction then, every copy of Excel but yours doesn’t care about the spacing. You should feel special!
Look…my problem was WITH HAVING SPACING…unless you are right behind me watching me, I doubt you KNOW what my problem is. I got it figured out, so there’s no need to even continue this thread any further. Thank you to everyone for your advice & help!
You’re right, I don’t know what your problem was. I do know what your problem wasn’t though – it wasn’t spacing. It was probably parenthesis as Excel is very picky about that, although I’m a little surprised that it didn’t suggest an addition one if that’s all that was missing.
The only reason I’m being a dick about it is that I know full well the next time you run into a problem, you’re going to spend time thinking you need to space out the formula properly, and that would be a complete waste of time. If you don’t believe me, put in a formula in Excel with no spaces, and then do the exact same formula but with numerous spaces in between every operator in the function. It will equate to the same value.
5Gen is right, excel doesn’t care about spaces in formulas. Most likely, Excel thought the cell with the formula in it was a text cell, so it didn’t try to calculate the formula. Once you deleted everything and retyped it, it realized it was supposed to be a number cell, and it calculated the formula like you wanted it to.

maybe she was putting spacing between field names like b 3 or something like that? :women:
5Gen is right.
He’s been a HUGE help with excel for me in the past; man knows his excel.
Oh, and by the way.. next time you need help in here, a little friendliness goes a long way.

honestly, i don’t think she was so bad. for some reason slick was being a bit of a prick right off the bat as if he was taking to place of someone else we all love so dearly. if someone comes in and admits ignorance and also shows that they’ve tried to figure it out on their own, but are currently stuck, then there is no reason to post the ghey "fail" type threads that are oh so popular in the main OT forum.
He was being a dick while she was fine, but then she decided to stop listening to people trying to explain that IT WASN’T SPACES and thinking she knows it all. Ignoring help from people who know better, especially after you have confessed ignorance, is rather stupid.
they’ll call you ‘captain save a ho’ if this was in the main forum
You might want to go back and actually read my very first post in this thread. There is no malice, no snide remarks, no being a dick, just straight facts. It was only after I was told that I was wrong, that I decided to be a dick, since pointing out facts didn’t seem to work the 1st time.
And now that I’ve reread your post, I realize you’re not even talking about me which is confusing as fuck since you quoted something about me!
I’m confused too.
Problem is solved, so I’m going to lock.
