External hard drive enclosure?
I’m thinking about replacing my current 250Gb SATA drive with a . Anyone have an enclosure they can recommend?
I think . Who knows, it came with my HP PC.
well, anything with an SATA internal connection will work. It mainly depends on what kind of external connection you want, USB, FireWire, eSATA, ect…
I would figure out which kind you want, search on newegg for the ones with highest ratings then choose one that fits your budget
They’re all pretty much the same. Just get whatever one is the most visually pleasing to you.

is esata as fast as internal sata?

My last external was an AMS DS, very happy with it:
When I bought it (2 years ago or so) they were having an issue with one of their boards. I called them up and they asked me to look at it and verify it was one of the "iffy" boards. Once I did they 2nd dayed me a new one and asked that after I get it to ship my old one back. They also sent me the UPS label.

eSATA is supposed to be as fast as internal SATA, and I believe it pretty much is.
USB 2.0 is rated to 480MBps and Firewire is rated for, I think, 400MBps but because of fundamental differences between the two FireWire typically will give you faster transfers than USB 2.0.
and USB 3.0 is coming, but do you really want to wait?
If speed is more important go eSATA, but if you want compatibility, to take the drive with you places and such, get USB or Firewire if you are around Macs often. You could fairly easily find an enclosure with USB and Firewire.

is there any issue at this point though? isn’t the bus speed way above what the drive is actually capable of doing anyway?
real time transfer rates, esata is still faster.
plus you get S.M.A.R.T. and other sata features. none of those work on USB or firewire.
moot point since USB 3.0 (4.something Gbit/s) devices aren’t out yet.
minus whale consider SATA III (6.0Gbit/s)
are eSATA ports standard (or becoming standard) on new PCs or do you have to get a controller card or something for it?

i think i’m going to go with this. it looks like what i need and has a decent price and appearance.
vanilla boards usually don’t come with eSATA.
if your board doesn’t have one, you need this:
you plug that to an internal sata port, then plug the external to the bracket
some external enclosures include this bracket (usually 1 eSATA port unlike the one above who has 2) plus eSATA cable. some don’t and you need to buy it separately.
that AMS doesn’t include that bracket.
i picked up one…forget what brand. Hard drive fits great, plug it in and xp see’s it and says it is ready for use, but no drive shows up.
I go to computer management and it isnt in there under storage
I go to device manager and it shows up under usb as a storage devices, and then the hard drive is correctly named under disk drives. Still cant access the data
I made sure the harddrive was set to master (tried slave just in case) and still nothing. Google is no help…before returning this thing, is there something else I could try?
I dunno if the case is faulty or what. I do know when I plug it in to the USB you can hear the hard drive start up.

odd that you cant see it in the management console, what do you have the drive formatted as?
