Going to need to put Ubuntu on my laptop.
I have the cd. Need to dual boot with winxp. Do I just shove it in the laptop and boot it up?
What’s the procedure here? I’ll research it a bit but getting some advice never hurts.
Stick it in and be careful installing. Simple enough really.
pretty much. it’ll ask where you want to install to.. just make sure to use a separate partition from your windows install
Besides the loss in HD space is there any drawbacks to duel booting? Does it compromise windows in any way?
well it’ll make you appreciate how easy it is to find and install software on windows.
but other than that, I guess not.
Unless you majorly fuck up the install, you’ll be fine.
I did it and it’s a piece of cake. Although I do recommend using a gparted live cd to shrink your windows partition instead of the Ubuntu live partition editor. Then just install ubuntu on the free space. I started with ten gigs for Ubuntu but now I only have ten gigs for windows.
if you’ve never installed linux before (which isn’t that hard now…), I’d recommend just installing vmware player and downloading the ubuntu appliance.
that’s what i did, just installed a ubuntu virtual machine. i’m sure it’ll have more than enough power for anything i’m going to do in linux.
I only need it to run one program so this might be the solution.
This is what I do now. I don’t even turn on my linux boxes anymore.
I had a strange boot/partitioning issue with Ubuntu when I first tried to install it a while back…do a search for my name and Ubuntu here in the forums and you’ll find the thread. I’d search for it but…you know.
