Linux USB External HD ? v.Ubuntu & Kubuntu
So my friend’s computer had Vista and won’t boot now. I’m not sure what exactly is going on but figured it would be best to backup their hard drive before doing anything. I downloaded a Live ISO of Ubuntu and Kubuntu and am trying them out before going over there. In both *Nix flavors I get the same error when attempting to view my external hard drive. The error is as follows (same in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.. suprise!):
The external is just an IDE drive in a CompUSA brand enclosure (I think, its technically my girlfriends). There is nothing special about it. I went back to Windows and ran CheckDisk as the error message suggested with no change nor errors found. The external works fine when connected to any other Windows XP computer. Any suggestions??
Look around for a Windows live CD
I’ve also used some BartPE live CD with pretty good results. I found out that I had to have the USB drive plugged in before booting to use it.

Never heard of BartPE. I ended up just borrowing my old external that I sold to my dad. I got the normal error that it wasn’t shut down properly with windows and did a force mount and it works fine.
