Network Printer Sharing
I can use my XP laptop to access a printer over the network that is connected to another XP PC.
My Vista PC cannot access the printer. Any settings I should have on or off to do this?

Can you ping the XP machine from the Vista one?
Can you get to //xp_machine from the Vista one?
I tried it with it off. Doesn’t work.
Might you need to install a Vista driver on the XP machine? I tried to share a windows printer to a mac yesterday (failed), and it asked about this at the time I set it up – said I might need to install drivers for other versions on the sharing PC.

Oh sorry. Somehow missed this post.
I can ping the XP machine from the Vista one. 4 sent, 4 received.
Do you mean I should go into my computer and type //xpmachinename into the address bar? Because that doesn’t contact it either, same problem as below.
What is extremely odd is I can see the other computers on the network within network connections. If I double click them it says the host name is invalid.
I’ll look into this.

Try it again with \ instead of //
Tried both.
I also found some people saying you could access a network printer by adding a local printer and creating a new network port. That didn’t work either. Just in case someone suggests that.
Sorry… I did have the wrong slashes in there
You will need a Vista printer driver, but the problem is that you can’t even connect to the machine…
Just for kicks, try turning off IPv6 on the Vista machine and see if that clears up the connection issues.
WOW I can indeed. Now that’s interesting.

I tried the Vista printer driver, but it as you say when it looked for the printer it wasnt there. But as I’ve just managed to connect to it with 192.168.0.4 I will fiddle about with it, see what I can do.
That got it. Connected with 192.168.0.4 and right clicked the HP icon and clicked connect. Job done.
Cheers guys.
Yeah, NetBEAUI and windows browsing via it sucks. But you can usually get there via the IP.
