Ordered a New Asus eeePC 900…what OS should i install?

have a 20gb linux eeePC arriving on monday

anybody else out there with an eeePC that could make OS recommendations?

edit: pic added

why?

i mean I really do NOT understand the eeePC fad. I’d much rather get a cheapie notebook.
i’m a junkie for toys, i’ve had 5 laptops in the past 6 months
from ibooks to dell’s to vaios, finally decided i wanted something small to browse OT with on the go

there is a huge mod culture for the eeePCs, even a touchscreen mod for the 7inch which i’m hoping makes it way to the 9inch very soon

and there are people that mod lawnmowers…. doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, practical, or a productive use of money.
hence why i call it a "toy"

if you dont have any real productive advice please

and i’ve seen some pretty sweet turbo NOS lawnmowers
if you want a "toy" computer then get that rediculously small sony.
i just had 1 and got rid of it, the 4.5inch screen was too small
the sony umpc are much more expensive than the asus

do you have any OS recommendations or not ?
i’m still fighting the urge to buy one

get xplite or nlite and make your own stripped xp

if you aren’t in any rush wait for the 901

i saw a video where someone had a stripped Vista on one
Isn’t there a special version of XP that Asus bundled with some of them? It was a greatly cut down version, similar to the nlite (I think) version.

yah, the 12gb models have XP on them, i wanted the extra 8gb of HD space so i ordered the linux model. i’m gona try a special ubuntu i found first,
but later if i add on a touchscreen or any other usb mods i’ll probably go back to XP i guess

can we just get a ban now? it’s obvious this guy isn’t good for much else than trolling.

as for the O/S, i’d do XP lite.

seriously

i havnt posted in this subforum for a long time
but i assumed the rules havn’t changed concerning stay on-topic and not being a dick like the main forum.

yah i guess i’ll do an XP on the 4gb partition of the SSD.

i do wana try out a few different options before i settle on one.

To me, these new netbooks are what all of the ghey macbook air and tiny sony’s should’ve been for years. They are super portable due to their size and are very inexpensive while still maintaining functionality. So, you aren’t going to play games or edit video on it. But for office apps, web browsing and email I’m sure these things rock as long as you are ok on the screen size.

i’ve seen videos of ppl playing gta:sa, farcry, cod4 and counterstrike on the eeePC

but yes they’re quite the great little tool for such a low cost
WTF!? $300? Oh fuck I want one - for they woman! I can just put Ubuntu on it, and have a VNC window open to the mac mini and… I DON’T HAVE TO BUY HER A FUCKING MACBOOK PRO!

SHIZAM.

What is the special version of Ubuntu? Thats what I’d run.
i really want one, just got an ipod touch. that fills my need for a simple little gadget to surf the web

would like to get one for my girlfriend, i was reading the procedure for loading xp onto an eeepc…it seems very involved with numerous registry edits etc

wait… these things can’t just run XP like normal?

i guess they made things easier for the 900, i must have been looking at an old guide for the 4g surf or something

get the poor girl the 9inch for 550
I would love one of them but there’s no way in hell I could use that tiny keyboard.
I bet you’d have a heart attack if your company ever issued you a Blackberry.

Yeah, I could just see having to carry around a book bag to hold the full sized keyboard for it.

There’s billions of these "subnotebooks" out and coming out.

e.g. Acer Aspire One, which I like:

millions more: Click through a few of ‘em.

Apparently Dell and Sony will be coming out with some too.

I think I’ll wait a few months, and then see what value I can get for my money. I’m hoping for some or one UNDER the 200 euro mark.
Nice links, thanks.

The Gigabyte is the first one I noticed that squeezes more than 600 vertical resolution out of the screen. 1280×768 isn’t exactly high def, but it beats the competition.

I wonder if that’s a typo on the hard drive size, though.
It says 80gb ssd drive? That can’t be right..

What do you know, the Gigabyte comes with a touch screen, too.

Microsoft says the touch screen won’t work with XP though, so you’ll need Vista or Linux.

Youtube review of it.

Looks like it is going to be 80gb ssd drive, but for how much?
sucks that Vista is such a bloated OS that it can’t run on current hardware.

Ya, this would definitely be where I start trying out linux distros instead of going with Vista.

But I wonder if there’s not a fix involved in getting XP to be able to handle the touch screen.
Dell’s:

Formerly known as mini Inspiron, Dell’s new line of subnotebooks will be named Dell E. Actually there will be 2 models, a 8.9″ model and a 12.1″ one.
This line of umpcs are targeted at kids, youth in general with purposes such as social networking/entertainment and mobile web/communication.
Specs:

  • Display: 8.9″ and 12.1″
  • Processor: 1.6 Ghz Intel Diamondville [Atom]
  • HDD: 4/8/16 SSD
  • Memory: 512/1024 MB
  • Camera: 0.3 Mp
  • Wireless: WiFi, BT, WiMax, WWAN
  • Battery: 4 cell 35Whr (~5 hr)
  • OS: Linux, WinXP
  • Personalization: 3-5 colors

This might be the cheap one I go for. I’m either gonna go for a pretty powerful one that I’ll work on (hooked up to a display + keyboard when I’m not on the go), or I’ll go for a cheap one to use mostly as a thin client, plus music and stuff when I’m on the go.

Far prefer the idea of carrying around a wee light laptop with 5 hours battery life to a big-ass one right now, but I need to look at how working on the wee ones will go. Atom might be more useless than I think it is.

From Dell, 8.9" screen + 4GB SSD + 512Mb ram + Ubuntu will need to be cheap. Might have to wait till Augest though.

The 16Gb SSDs I’ve seen cost nearly 300 euro… They can’t have an 80Gb SSD, maybe it’s something like an 8Gb SSD plus 72Gb HDD? But I don’t know.. A couple of them are mentioning 80Gb SSDs.

I think that’s bullshit. Look at the picture! It’s running XP.

And the touchscreen doesn’t work, according to the guy in the vid, irrc.

What is up with that, seriously?

Is it so MS can milk off tablet edition, or something like that? is tablet edition even more expensive?

xp had a tablet edition. it all boils down to drivers — and that’s not MS’s fault.
i’m not too worried about touchscreen drivers when i mod my eeePC

most of the kits have XP drivers that i could easily compile for linux
I have an Asus one, I kept the linux that came on it. It’s a Xandros based distro, I moded the preferences and can pull from the asus, xandros and debian repositories.

One of the other guys at work put XP, and that other ended up dual booting XP and linux …
i just got my 900, have the advanced desktop xandros on it now. thinking about switching to xp
WHERE THE FCK DOES XANDROS COME FROM?

i never caught that.
Xandros was a desktop debian port a couple years back … not bad.

Hmm I dunno, I had v3.0 a while back … I thought they just released 4 …
I’m on my eee pc 700 right now on a stripped down version of xp

potroast, if you can’t see the avantage of a 1kg incredibly small laptop then don’t know what else to say. Works for me at uni in lectures. A full size laptop and a powerful desktop is overkill.

my eeePC came pre-shipped with xandros

I’m just asking. I honestly didn’t know.

they still cant get around making v4l2 working with flash that supports v4l1

i fixed this on my other linux machines by making a loopback into v4l to run my webcam in flash

but the xandros people couldnt do this out of the box

wtf?

i saw vista on one

i need to do the touchscreen
The touchscreen is nice, but if you’re going to try running vista, you really should get something beefier.

i’m not gona use vista

notice the "greddy" in my previous post
Looks pretty cool.

What browser is that where the window buttons are integrated into the URL bar?
