SSD’s use more power?
So, according to Tom’s Hardware, SSD drives actually use more battery power than regular drives.
Dude, that suck. Considering that I get like 2 hours tops on my fucking piece of shit MBP battery right now when wifi is on.
I can pull 3h+ still with my MB with my battery at 74% life.
Time to head to the apple store.
While connected to wifi? While hitting the processor with a lot of SQL?
Well no shit your battery is only lasting 2h if you have heavier cpu usage.
With wifi and bt. No high cpu usage. Mostly surfing with music. Sometimes eclipse is open and ill be coding. Still can do 3h w/o problems
My old Pentium 3 laptop pulls 14 watts at 100% cpu usage with Wifi on.
Or at least, that’s what Kubuntu’s power meter is telling me.
SSD’s are still young though. spinning hard disks have gone as far as they ever will. yeah, they may continue to make them spin faster (and thus need more power and make more noise), they may continue to increase density they may increase cache size and they may make changes to the controllers (IDE, SCSI, SATA, FC), but for all other purposes, have hard drives changed much in the last 10 years that you can remember? i think the technology of solid state disk is still new enough that we can expect to see more performance increases and even power decreases as time goes on.

I think I should actually be able to USE my fucking computer and get 3+ hours. Apple really fucked up with this generation: over-powered, under batteried.
hmm, these findings are definitely counter-intuitive; it’s hard to believe a mechanical HD using less power.
I believe the issue is due to how each uses power. They mention in the article that hard disk access uses more or less power depending on your work (more head movement = more power consumption) while all access to SSD is the same. I bet a HDD has a higher peak and if heavily used can use more power than SSD but average usage probably doesn’t stress disk enough.

Its the second one I’ve had. I think this is just as good as it gets when you actually hit the processor and disk.
Even Guy Kawasaki complains about MBP battery life being sub-2 hour.
Hmm. Well, since you obviously have money to burn, you could try an SSD anyway. It might use more power when reading and writing, but it can instantly go into powersave mode whereas a magnetic disk has to stay ready for a while after its last use. I’m sure that adds up to substantial power savings over time, if your power management settings are done right. No reason to keep an SSD "powered-up" for 15 minutes of idle time, after all, since it can just come back online in a millisecond.
updated. apparently Tom’s Hardware retested with newer drives and found that it wasn’t so clear cut. under different workloads, SSD drives may be more efficient.
