Step by Step guide on how to build a PC?
im out of the loop for the past 7 years. i still thought AGP was superior graphics port only to find out that express PCI > that.
i was wondering if theres an updated guide on how to build PC’s that i can get a link to cause just in case so i dont fuck up.
like the thing that sucked the most for me was setting up MOBO to the ATX Case + hooking up extra USB ports that came with the ATX case to the mobo…
This is more of a guide to help you select parts vs actually putting the pieces together, but it should still be helpful since you have been out of the loop for so long
Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad
P35 motherboard from Asus/Gigabyte/Abit/Intel
2GB DDR2 from Corsair/Crucial/OCZ
Nvidia based PCI-E graphics card
Whatever ATX case you like
400-500W PSU from Seasonic/FSP/Sparkle/Corsair
SATA hard drive
SATA DVD burner
They’ve made everything more or less idiot-proof when it comes to assembling it. Everything only fits in one way. I usually install the CPU, Heatsink, and RAM while the motherboard is outside of the case, then put it in the case and move onto drives, video card, and power supply.
Installing the mobo into the case is probably the "hardest" part as you said, but that only requires that you look at both of them and put 6 to 9 standoffs in the correct position. You also have to hook up the power/reset/speaker/etc, but that’s pretty simple if you check the mobo manual for a diagram.
quoting sharp to show his link because OT hides links.
u know my first attempt at building a computer 7 years ago i fried my motherboard twice before taking it to a professional to install it because i screwed in extra spacers that screw into case and hold up mobo, the extra one was touching an area that shorted the mobo
that kinda discouraged me from building it again. cause i didnt know where to screw in spacers so i put em in every hole i saw on the case

some cases actually have the holes labeled ATX or MicroATX, and even if they dont the way I do it is set the mobo in there and line up the holes in the board with the holes on the tray, then put the stand-offs in those holes
some sticky threads on anandtech are quite good resources.
