currently, yes imo.

AMD Phenoms are better chips, but they don’t work well with that board.

Also,… AMD has stopped production of their high-end Athlon chips (e.g. 6000+, 6400+, and some).

They will be replaced by 65nm chips or something. That 5400+ Black Edition is one of the first replacements (It replaced the 5000+ BE). There are rumors of a 5600+ BE, 5800+ BE, or 6000+ BE, which would be better. But they are not out yet, or maybe they are just rumors since AMD is silent about it.

Newegg is still selling the 90nm 6000+, but you’d be better off with the 5800+ Brisbane (not BE).

The reason I picked the 5400+ BE over the 5800+ is that the BE has an unlocked multiplier and can be easily overclocked to the same speed as the 5800+ or more.
If you don’t oc,… get the 5800+ or wait for the other replacements.

note: Black Editions doesn’t come with a cooler.
That 5800+ at newegg is OEM, cpu only,… so it also doesn’t come with a cooler.

newegg is USA only, sorry
i believe tigerdirect.com ships overseas
try

not sure if the new replacements are available in the uk yet.
at least you get an idea what chips to find.
remember,… you need an AM2 cpu
Athlon X2 5000+ and above (up to 6400+)
Black Editions (BE) have unlocked multipliers, no cooler included
not AMD Phenoms

Help? Thanks.
I’ve used study guides from fravo.com for a few certs and they are amazing…

They also guarantee you pass on your first try or they will give you your money back.
A+ for dummies was actually a pretty good book for someone wanting to pass the test

Is A+ recognized in Europe? (Ireland specifically)

Twould be good if I could get a cert to my name..
A+ isn’t really recognized anywhere as being anything worthwhile.

it is if a job you apply for requires it, Dell requires it for their technicians. It’s a bottom rung cert so ya you arent landing 100K a year jobs with it but it’s a good basic indicator for anyone getting started.

its absolutely worthless, except for that it’s a basic level requirement, where if you don’t have it, then you obviously can’t do anything with computers.

It’s more of a formalized assurance of ‘I do know a little bit about computers’
I figure it’ll help my get jobs while I’m in school studying for my comp engineering degree. I just want the cert to have it, I know some employers care for it and some don’t. It really depends on who you talk to. I didn’t want this to be a debate thread as I’m sure even some of the people who think its worthless have it. You can’t get some jobs without some sort of certifications or somet experience, and this is a good cert to start with, wouldn’t you agree?
If he has no experience or skills, there’s nothing wrong with an A+ cert to get his foot in the door at an entry-level position. Why do you fucks have to troll every thread about this shit?

Help him or leave him be.

I would agree, as many places require it as a prerequisite of working there, as I more or less hinted at with my ‘formalized assurance’ statement

I can guarantee you a place isn’t going to turn you down for not having your A+ if you’ve got part of your mcse or your ccna or something.

Likely not, however, especially retail tech stores, have signs boasting ‘All our technicians are A+ certified’

and they could not allow you to be a tech until you were. That said, if you have your higher level certs, it’s pretty sad if you’re working at a retail tech store. If you were, they’d likely hire you, then pay to have you A+ certified so that you could be a tech.

That said, it’s neither here nor there for this discussion. A+ is the first step for most aspiring computer technicians, because it’s the most basic of the certifications.
The Windows XP [soon Vista, I guess] part of the mcse/mcsa is just as easy to get as the A+, and a lot more relevant.

yep, the 70-620 exam is easy as hell
So would you say A+ for dummies >= the top seller on that page & others listed?

would it be important to look for something that is published in 08? or late 07? i figure they’d possibly include more up-to-date info. what would you all say?

cmsurfer, thanks for the recommendation, but i just have a think for paper books > online. although that guarantee is kinda cool

You buy online and then download the guides to your PC. It comes with a built-in test engine where you can simulate the test or just practice questions and they offer explanations on all answers… It also comes with all the questions in a .pdf you could print out if you wanted.

Definitely get something current. I’m not sure how often, but they do update the tests to stay current. I would imagine Vista questions are included now…

I’d just go to a Barnes and Noble and look around to see what they have. Take a close look… Some books offer a discount on the test voucher.

When I took my tests I think they were $125… I think it’s $250/test now??
If the HR dept. is scanning through a boatload of resumes and they’re tossing ones that don’t say A+, because that’s one of the requirements, then you’re screwed and may not even get an interview where you can prove your knowledge to someone beyond HR. It’s cheap insurance.
exam works program. you will pass the exam in 1 week. I studied for 1 week and passed with there exam software if you want it hit me up via pm

If he has no experience or skills, there’s nothing wrong with an A+ cert to get his foot in the door at an entry-level position. Why do you fucks have to troll every thread about this shit?

Help him or leave him be.

Truth.

I got my A+. I took a class. The only thing that might be considered ‘hard’ with the A+ is that you have to have a bit of knowledge about things that are kind of obsolete – like knowing IRQ assignments and such.

If I had a room full of components that were not assembled and a W2K disk could you put all those pieces together into a working PC and get the OS installed on it without my help?

If the answer is ‘YES’ then just get a book and take the damned test already.
If the answer is ‘No’ then an A+ class is a terrific introduction into such things.
so now the question would be what should I do with my a+ Im going on a interview next week for a call center but was wondering where I could get a more hands on job even if it pays crap.

Cisco is footing the bill for the Pearson VUE centers. If you’re using Prometric for vendors that allow it, though, you’ll be fine.

my computer failed, and I don’t know what’s wrong with it. Tried a different (newer even) PSU with it and it only led to different problems (USB didn’t power up).

It was at least 5 years old – athlon xp 2600+. Getting it back to life is secondary right now.

I have parts for 2 other broken computers (each with odd problems too, but I have 2 or 3 not-so-old PSUs, shitloads of DDR2 ram, and a PCIe graphics card) – one is an athlon 64 and the other is a core 2 duo – E2160 or something like that. 1.8Ghz, but my brother says I can overclock it to 3Ghz. Nevertheless, even at 1.8 or a pile less than 3Ghz I’ll be happy because it’s free.

It’s the intel computer I want to revive (if you could call it that). So, I want a good motherboard, so I can upgrade these not-so-great parts (quad core and ddr3) down the line. Also on-board Intel video would suit me down to the ground (don’t play games, don’t want to buy a video card).

I hope there’s good boards out there. I WILL spend over 100 euro if it’s something that I will be able to upgrade later and will keep me going for now. Right now I have nothing.

Any tips, et cetera, appreciated.

ps troubleshooting hardware is a cunt!
are intels motherboards themselves good? Neither of the stores I’m looking at sell them!

(komplett.ie and overclockers.co.uk – any other stores I should be looking at that will ship to ireland for cheap enough?)

so heres the deal.

my computer failed, and I don’t know what’s wrong with it.

Any tips, et cetera, appreciated.

ps troubleshooting hardware is a cunt!

if all of your hardware is that old, you might have sockets/ports issues, as alot of things have changed in 5 years. do a little research on what kind all your hardware takes to make sure it’ll mesh well. other than that, for that price you can find a mb that will surf the internet/msword it up. hope that help s

Gigabyte GA-EP45C-DS3R or Asus P5QC will give you the option to use either DDR2 or DDR3.

if on-board video is important, nvidia chipsets > intel GMA.
the problem with nvidia mobos is that they are buggy compared to mobos with intel chipsets.
since troubleshooting hardware is a cunt, just get an intel chipset.

the latest Intel chipsets with on board graphics are the G45/G43 chipsets.
you can still get the old ones (Q35/Q33, G35/G33, etc) but you’d be better off with the latest one.

note: the E2160 uses the LGA 775 socket. the best cpu you can upgrade on an LGA 775 mobo are the current Penryn CPUs. the next Intel chips coming out will use a different socket.

imo, they are for grandmas.

try
great stuff!

now I know exactly what to look for.

cheers!
the cheapest mobo i can find is micro atx. do i need a special psu/case for that or would atx still do the trick?
