Ok so yesterday I wrote an MP3 player just because I thought it would be a cool exercise and it’s more or less done, all the core functionality is there it even supports multiple playlists and the ability to modify the ID3 tag data and all that stuff… but it’s missing one thing, the spectrum analyzer.

I don’t feel much like writing this from scratch, though I guess thats an option if there isnt a better way, but I was just wondering if anyone new of a free resource to quickly add a winamp style spectrum analyzer to a .NET project.

Along those same lines, I am brand new to Visual Basic and .NET programming so is there any really good resource for getting free code snippits or components or whatever you want to call them?
Oh yeah it also desperately needs a face lift lol, I am not creative at all and just kind of slapped all the controls together, any ideas to make this look better? I would love to learn how to make an application skinnable. I’ve been up all night doing this lol this is basically my "Hellow World" program for VB.NET

That’s why I could never be a real programmer; I don’t have the drive to do shit just to see if I can. I’d much rather download WinAmp instead, and write code that hasn’t been written before.

Speaking of which, I imagine the AmaroK source code would be helpful.
Well some people choose to learn by reading books, I choose to learn but just muddling my way through it and figuring it out, I’ve been doing it since I was a little kid lol. I know there is no use for this, no one in their right mind would use it over the dozens of other free media players, but just the 6 or so hours I have spent on it have taught me so much, like I said this is the first time I have ever written in VB, I needed to learn it and .NET for my job so I thought wtf ill make an mp3 player lol

honestly, that’s a great way to learn. you can learn a lot by doing something that no one else has done, but when you are starting out it is much more enlightening to try to do something and then see how others have done it too. then, if you get stuck you can refer to others for ideas.
What do you mean? I say lol a lot? Yeah blame it on WoW, its like half of the average WoW players vocabulary
I (almost) hate to be the dick that says so, but this forum is…strangely…more pleasant lately…as if a great dark cloud has lifted. I wonder what it could be.

I always thought that the optical was the best audio transmission to go from a HTPC to a receiver. I’ve been told recently that you get better sound quality from having 5.1 analog out to the receiver. My computer and receiver support both so I was wondering which one is better? I did some research online and haven’t gotten a straight answer, can anyone help?
i use the analog headphones jack, then again, i dont care much for sound quality.
I use optical also but I do believe 5.1 discreet analog output would sound better… analog usually sounds better than digital… digital suffers from compression

Since the source is a PC, most likely all his media is digital.

If you have a decent receiver, then it probably has a better DAC than your soundcard does, so it’s better to pass the bits straight to the receiver.
depends on the receiver and the soundcard you are using. If you are using onboard sound, without a doubt use optical. If you are using a Prelude, the DAC and opamps are very good. Unless you are using a mid to high end receiver, chances are they Prelude’s will be better.
i’d say optical…although it only outputs stereo to my reciever for some reason, i want 5.1!

SPDIF/TOSLINK only carries two channels of audio unless it is compressed. So unless the source is outputting either AC3 or DTS, it will only be 2 channel. Although a lot of newer motherboards and soundcards can encode both AC3 and DTS.
I have an okay sound card and an older receiver (3-4 years old). The optical I’m currently using is coming off the motherboard although the soundcard came with the mobo. It is an Asus p5n32 board and I’ve heard they have fairly decent sound cards. It seems like the analog would be the better choice because it would send the multiple channels all the time while the optical seems to pick and choose when to send the 5.1 signal.

Compression only matters if the data quality is degraded. Case in point: ZIP file are compressed, but they don’t lose bits in the process.

that’s the lossy vs lossless debate.

In the end, it depends on way too many factors to really discuss here. And budget and amps/speakers are going to influence the answer, greatly.
So… stick with optical? Or are some saying switch to multi-channel analog?
you never told use what you are using for equipment, so we really can’t say.

10:1 he is using MP3 format audio files… which is, to say the least, lossy

That’s not the compression we were talking about. We were talking about the compression of decoded audio data sent over the S/PDIF or TOSLink cable. If the compression used to send 5.1 over those cables is lossless, then it doesn’t matter if it’s compressed.

You don’t decode or recompress data and then send it via s/pdif. You send AC-3 or DTS encoded data via s/pdif to a decoder on the other end.

Sorry, I used the wrong terminology, but what I was getting at is, as long as AC-3 or DTS doesn’t degrade the quality of the audio signal, then it doesn’t matter if the data had to be compressed to feed 6 channels of audio through a cable with only enough bandwidth for 2 channels.
I’m using a pioneer receiver out to a full tower 5.1 setup with self powered woofer. Currently running over optical in what I thought would pull the 5.1 channel audio out of my matroska high def files. Thus far it seems that my receiver is simply "faking" the surround sound because there are some signals being sent to the rear that should definitely have stayed up front. This is why I was wondering if the multichannel analog would have better channel differentiation and quality. As for music, yea I play MP3’s but I honestly don’t care how well they sound because they are recorded in stereo so my receiver fakes the surround anyway. Do you need anything else for specs or what not?

Dunno, I’d do it from the video card not the sound card. The ATI’s for example pump audio down the HDMI port of the newer video cards, the built onboard new intel boards with HDMI pump audio down it too, not sure about NVidia.

HDMI will be exactly the same as optical in terms of quality.

The one that comes with the Asus p5n32 motherboard. It has the multiple channel analog outs. My optical is coming off the actual motherboard but it came with the card because the motherboard didn’t have the analogs onboard.

you are using onboard so no. optical is the better choice here.
Now if only I can get my sound settings to allow me to use both optical and analog simultaneously I will be golden. Optical to the receiver and analog to the computer speakers in the other room.

I disagree. If there were enough interference to affect things in the digital domain, I’d think more than just the soundcard would suffer. The noise you hear is probably being introduced in the analog output stage.

Years ago I had a Gateway 650XL. Overall, a great performance notebook. It had analog and optical output. When playing mp3’s and then hammering the hard drive you’d hear high-speed "ticks" through the output regardless of which output was used.

It shouldn’t. optical is bit-perfect, no matter what is outputting it.

bit-perfect of what the ouput is….. but emi and cross-talk still affect the circuits when crammed into something has high-density as a laptop mobo.
the problem with digital through optical fiber is that at some point on both the sending and receiving end it is still analog through copper and as susceptible to interference as anything else.

That’s the problem with copper wire, yes. That’s why using optics to get the signal from point A to point B is better, because you could run it through the middle of a nuclear reactor and the signal won’t be affected.

It could have been due to your mp3 software suffering from buffer underrun since it was competing for disk access. IMO, corruption of digital data due to RF interference is probably the least likely culprit. The inteference would have to be pretty severe. And, if it was that severe, why weren’t more critical components affected?

It’s only the final playback stage that is analog. Digital data from CDs, DVDs, Bluray, etc. are not converted to analog until it reaches a DAC and sent to an amp and speaker.

even when NO mp3 is playing, using the trackpad results in a slight hum on many laptops when connected to high amplification. Stop using the trackpad and no more hum.

That’s the problem with onboard "goodies" — especially with laptops… teh traces are simply too crammed together.
The issue is whether the hum is picked up digitally or by the analog portion of the output. Given the "all-or-nothing" nature of digital signals, it seems unlikely that digital corruption would manifest itself as a hum.

a hum is a sinusoidal wave. digital pulses, when occuring at high frequency do represent a similar peak>peak pattern.

You’re still thinking analog. Digital signals don’t simply mix like analog signals do. The chances that noise would alter the bitstream in such a way that it sounds like a hum was mixed in with the original content is probably somewhere near the probability of a monkey randomly mashing a keyboard and typing up the complete works of shakespeare.

If you’ve ever watched analog TV with rabbit ears, you’ve probably seen snow or ghosting. A small amount of noise disrupts the signal, but the intended content is still visible behind the static. With digital tv broadcasts, the signal can absorb some interference without altering the bitstream. But once that noise threshold is crossed, you don’t get static, you get a screen full of colored blocks.

It’s all or nothing in the digital realm, so if your audio isn’t completely obliterated, it’s probably not data corruption.

correct, it’s not data corruption. It’s crosstalk and emi.

crosstalk and emi are the cause, data corruption is the effect. If there is no data corruption, then how exactly is the optical output affected as you previously stated?
The point is, you won’t hear a hum if you get EM interference in a digital signal. You’ll hear clicks and pops.

correct. the point I’ve been trying to make the entire damn time.

let’s just call it NOISE. NOISE that is NOT supposed to be there.

I have a Cadillac that has a 6-disc CD changer that will not play mp3’s (only burned audio CD’s…so like 15-20 songs at max). It also has a functional DVD player that will play burned DVD’s but not burned DVD’s with MP3’s on it.

I was hoping that somebody might have a solution for me that will allow my mp3’s to be played on the DVD player.

My thought process was this:

I know that the Caddy DVD player will play burned video discs (full of music videos). So I know that you can create .avi’s into a playable DVD disc. My thought was that I could somehow convert my .mp3’s into .avi’s, and then from there burn them to a playable DVD.

Any thoughts on this? I can’t seem to find much information on converting .mp3’s into a playable .avi format.
why not just convert them to wav, make an audio cd/dvd from the mp3’s…
there are only two decent Ipod adapter kits, both are $200

plus the price of an IPOD

that still doesn’t solve my problem. I’d rather solve the burned DVD issue….
$150 for an ipod nano 4g.

I got an adapter for my chevy for $20 (kenwood hu), and $60 for my toyota (stock 6disc changer headunit).

Your dvd issue is solved by my suggestion. You’ve already said you can’t do exactly what you want to do. Therefore you’re either here to be a whinny bitch, or you’re stupid. Of course this can be remedied by coming back to reality.

There has to be some compromise otherwise you’ll never get that functionality.
If you have auxillary inputs on the back of the deck you can put a headphone to rca cable from the ipod to the deck. This is what I did in my eclipse and it worked great. It was about 10 bucks for the CD changer to RCA adapter piece and then 3 dollars for the headphone to rca cable. Cheapest fix if you have a deck that allows for cd changer controlling.
no aux inputs available

How does this suggestion at all help answer my question of adding mp3’s onto a burned DVD?

I don’t have any desire to spend $350 to fix this problem. The only way your suggestion could be any worse is if you say that I should purchase a $1k navigation head unit. Hell, maybe I should just sell my car and buy a different one that plays mp3’s.

I’m not a "whinny" bitch, nor am I stupid. Your suggestion clearly had very little thought behind it and certainly didn’t addess my situation.

stay the fuck out of my thread asshole
You demand things that cannot be done. Clearly you’re stupid.
clearly one suggestion has been posted that will work…

yet, it can’t be done. I might as well sell my car and buy your shitty toyota and Ipod adapter and then the problem will be solved of course
I’d do Jolly’s suggestion, but you could try playing around with Movie Maker to make a movie with MP3’s and a still.

god damn. you were doing pretty well for a while, but still your true asshole nature resurfaces.
If you aren’t diehard about audio quality you could always go with an FM transmitter. Otherwise, you’ll probably have to convert them to something that the dvd player will recognize. Is there a way to burn a black screen with music as chapters on a dvd? Surely the toyota cannot be the best answer.
it has a dvd player… do you have dvd authoring software? You could easily setup a dvd with songs as chapters… then use the next/previous chapter to go forward and backward… hell you could even setup whole albums as chapters, create your own title screen to access the chapters that would be depicted with the album covers. If you wanted to get REALLY fancy you could even record winamp visualizations of each song as it plays and use that as the video… that would be pretty bitching actually, but greatly reduce the number of songs you would get on each dvd

Don’t listen P07 he is a jackass and ignorant if he thinks you are asking for something impossible.

one thing though is that you are a guy driving a cadillac with a DVD player built in. i can’t imagine that even $400 to do this the proper way would break the bank.

anyway, i never tried this software, but it is free for you to try. it says it can convert between various audio formats and includes avi and mp3.

I’ve been looking at doing something in this area. If you really only want to spend 250$ you can do it. I don’t know if you have a double-din headunit or not but depending on that you can get a new HU that reads mp3’s easily. Installment cost around 50$. HU cost around 100$ (the really cheap ones)

Problem is with a bit more money you can get bluetooth and all kinds of shit. Double-din head units cost more so look to spend upwards of 200$ if you go that way. You can get single deck HU with double din adapters but they look like shit.
You can do this without spending any money… read what I already wrote…

Nero for example, has everything he needs to do this.
You can’t make the player play MP3s if it doesn’t have a decoder built-in. Maybe you can convert them to low-quality WAV files so you can still fit them all on one disc, but then it’ll sound like shit.

Alternately, you could convert them to full-quality WAV files and burn them to multiple discs.

he can do it
mp3 to avi converter

then burn to DVD using convertXtoDVD
Yeah, I would google a program that can convet mp3 to avi as some people have mentioned. Then just burn them to DVD with Nero or a similar program. Worth a shot, but…

To be honest, it sounds like a lot of effort for something that may be worth spending some money to fix. Perhaps with a cheaper mp3 player/car connector or something. Or if you’re a DIY person: google for info like that. If you can somehow hardwire an aux input cable to your headunit on your own (I know nothing about this, you’d have to look into it) then you can hook up any cheap mp3 player (or even your laptop if you wanted) to it and play the music like that. You might want to go to craigslist and see if anyone has some cheap solutions to your problem or something if you don’t want to do it yourself. I’m not sure how easy this would be either, but if it is possible, it may be a better longrun solution cuz it might be a pain to convert and burn all those songs. Depends on how you feel about that and whether there are any other solutions without just buying the iPod + accessories. Good luck

Thats a possibility -one he should undoubtedly try- but to do this everytime he wants new music, worth it? I understand the whole iPod debate and thats not what he wants because it costs a lot, but I really do have to question whether saving hte money is worth the hassle. But that’s really for the OP to decide.

OP, I would try the Nero thing. Hopefully it will work and you’ll be satisfied. If you do get sick of it, it really seems like its worth it to spend the money for this one. My personal opinion is that having to hassle with technology is generally not worth it unless you enjoy it or are really fucking determined. I think you may get sick of all the effort just to listen to music in your car. Also, the iPod connector may help you sell your car for slightly more if you one day chose to.

import the mp3, import a pic, add the pic to the story board, add the mp3 to the timeline (just drag and drop),… then publish the movie

did you happen to try the software that i linked earlier? i didn’t test it, but it claim it could do what you are asking.

one thing to keep in mind with AVI files also is that not all AVIs are created equal. AVI is a container that could contain videos encoded with a number of codecs including Divx and XVid as well as MJPEG and others i’m sure. then, i think XVid at least uses MP3s for the audio stream (or at least can use MP3 encoding for the audio stream). so, if your player can’t decode MP3s, you probably can’t play certain AVI formats that depend on MP3 encoding for the audio.

if you really want to go with this, i think what some have said with DVD chapters and just putting the MP3 music as the audio over some static pictures would work.

to more off’s point about people suggesting iPods, just know that the iPod is the most popular PMP right now. so, like Bandaids and Kleenex, when people are saying "get an iPod" they aren’t necessarily saying that the Apple iPod brand PMP is the only solution. quite often a person is meaning "buy an MP3 player."

it doesn’t matter what you think about iPods, it is pure fact that Apple cornered the market on portable media players. i’m seeing different numbers ranging from 70-90% (and possibly higher) of the PMP market is made up of iPods. they aren’t the best player, but they have a great interface and great 3rd party support (do you see any cars that come with Archos connectivity built in? no. it is either iPod or just a generic auxiliary jack). plus, are there any ways to buy songs that is better than iTunes? again, iTunes isn’t the best application and the Fair Play protected files kind of suck (and keep you locked into an iPod), but what other company has the success of Apple and thus the selection and pricing?

What iPod has is a name, and a reputation, and the reason they sell so well is because people don’t give two shits about researching something before they buy it they just want what their friends have and/or are brainwashed by gimmicky advertising.

lol. truth.
I don’t think buying an IPOD is the correct way to go.

I struggled with a similar problem for years.
I spend 2 1/2 hours a day commuting. I wanted to listen to a radio show that clocks in at just over 3 hours during that commute.
The issue was that I had a paid subscription to the radio shows website (coast to coast am) and they distributed the .mp3 files as 4 45 minute files every day.

So the math is pretty simple to follow here.
A cd holds 72 minutes of music. 2 45 minute files = 90 minutes of music. Therefore without a bunch of trouble I am left with having to burn 4 CD’s when I only really needed to burn 2.

I struggled with it for a long time. Everything I tried to do was a huge pain in the ass.
Eventually I got a CD player for my car that played MP3’s.
That was the solution.
1 CD will carry more then 2 weeks worth of MP3 files of that radio program.

I know that replacing your CD player isn’t the answer you are looking for, but you should look into it. It really is a cheaper solution then I thought it would be.
I have looked into several solutions:

1) replacing the whole DVD/CD/Nav head unit in my Cadillac.
The problem with this is that:
A) it’s expensive, I wouldn’t want to downgrade and lose the NAV capability. So I’d end up spending $1.5-2K on an aftermarket HU
B) I would lose all of the sweet computer functions that GM so thoughtfully tied into the stock HU. The CTS-V has all of it’s performance monitors and car enhancements set up through the computer that is integrated into the stock HU. No solution exists yet to replace this entirely

2) An Ipod with applicable Ipod interface.
As I’ve mentioned before I don’t own and Ipod so there would be the initial cost in purchasing that ($150) and even worse yet is that the only decent Ipod interface with my stock HU is $200 and doesn’t even allow you to scroll through artists. It will only play through playlists. What a pain.

3) Somehow use the stock DVD’s player ability to play burned VD’s by tricking the DVD player when it is full of mp3’s.

4) Burn all of my albums to regular old CD-r’s as audio disks. Effectivelly one disk per album. This is the only option I will consider persuing if the burned DVD solution doesn’t work.

Audio-DVD-Converter looks awesome and I will certainly give it a shot!!

Doomsday, appreciate your advice. Do you happen to know how to use Nero to do this?
And lets please give this Ipod argument a rest.

I don’t care which PMP is better. I don’t plan on using one for my solution either way. I do have a 512mB Sansa that I use when I go running. Otherwise I’m either in my car for less than 5 minutes (short commute), at my house (use my computer), or in my office (once again, use my computer).

what version of Nero do you have? I’m still using Nero 7 Ultra Edition but is still probably the same with Nero 8.

it’s easy.

in Nero StartSmart, go to Photo and Video > Make Your Own DVD-Video > Make Movie

add your Media files.
just drag the mp3s to Audio 1
drag the pic to video track
then extend the pic to sync with Audio 1’s timeline, or add more pics, or whatever you want to do. you can put song titles and shit.

Here,.. the mp3 is already a movie/vid.
Divide the mp3s as chapters
burn the dvd

and you’re done.

Ah, ok. Cool
I know I used some program to do the exact same thing but can’t remember what it was. I want to say VirtualDubMod but don’t think it was that. I know I tried Windows Movie Maker but that damn program always crashs or enters error-hell before I ever finish anything. I’ve never completed anything with WMM and have used it on multiple computers including fresh OS installs as well as fresh WMM installs….. I know others who’ve used it with no issues so I don’t know.

Assuming doom is right and just burning a data disk with wav’s won’t work (which I see no reason why it wouldn’t but I’ve never tried), try Windows Movie Maker or Nero (if you have it) since there are instructions here.
so good news and bad news

I finally was able to use nero vision to create a playable DVD with mp3 tracks

I was able to put it in my car and the DVD player recognized the disk and would play the music

the bad news is that fucking GM crippled the dvd player in this car so that you can’t use any functions while in motion. Most importantly, you can’t switch tracks, not even forward or backward without stopping the vehicle.

FUCK!!!!

My roadtrip is coming up in a week and I think I’m going to have no choice but to burn all of my albums to CD-R’s….what a waste!!

At least it has a 6-disk changer so the process won’t be totally unbareable.

Also considering enabling the already on-board XM
Here are the steps to be driving, riding, and watching (Be safe, if you are diving, do not watch screen!!)
Step 1 Put in DVD.
Step 2 Play DVD (Do not leave it at the front menu, if you do not start the DVD you will not be able to start it after you begin to drive.)
Step 3While playing – Hit the second from the bottom buttons on the right hand side of the DVD screen and then press the forward Seek Button. (You will see a little flicker)
NOTE: If you see a differnt screen with the words "cold reboot" on it, press the same button combination AGAIN and it should go back to the DVD…

Step 4 Now disable the parking break and make sure that the DVD stays on.
Step 5 Enjoy

If you did everything correct you will notice that all the features are disabled. If you are at the main menu of the dvd you will not be able to select play movie or any features.

If you would like to stop the dvd, you must hit the top right button first. Then it will bring up the safety lock if you are in motion or parking break off.

 Other notes:
I got DVD-R to play fine in mine, but the +R are having some problems.
thanks, yes, i followed that guide but what it neglects to mention is that you can’t skip tracks

so, i can get it to play but I can’t go to the next track, which means i’m pretty much locked into whatever shitty song i may have running…

Yes, and the solution: Don’t put shitty songs on your play list
yeah but a lot of them are albums I have yet to listen to

this road trip was going to be the time I get to first listen

Currently I use iTunes because I have an iPod, unfortunately it’s a slow, bulky piece of shit for Windows. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
Winamp Pro plays and encodes mp3’s, aac, ogg, and so on. It also has free radio stations and a playlist builder that analyses your music to figure out which songs will go well together. It also syncs with all popular media players, including the iPod.

It costs $20, but to me that’s a small price to pay for a really good product that I’ve been using for ten years now. There’s also a free version if you don’t want to shell out the cash.

There are also tons of add-ons to customize the app, and it supports MP3 players such at iPods
won’t you still have to use itunes to sync the ipod? isn’t that a pain in the ass?
For Windows, I’m a fan of MediaMonkey.

God, it pisses me off that Apple installed this shitty MobileMe software with their iTunes 7.7 update. If you have installed that, but haven’t noticed, it is sneakily installed with the latest version of iTunes. To uninstall it, go to Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista, then remove the Apple Mobile Device Support.

It is annoying because there is a lot I like about Apple as a company, but this is really bad form.

you know i’m not an apple hater, but i’ve read a lot of bad shit about MobileMe and it pissed me off when i stumbled on that crap on my Vista laptop. man, i’m already nervous enough about this thing falling on its ass without companies sneaking their crappy software in too.

apple loves to mess with windows.

remember the virus on the ipods?

nah, that wasn’t intentional, i know, but i hear people pissed at how iTunes has installed some service (deux explain iPod Service), and they did it again.

is this ‘bad form’ necessary?

See, I can deal with MobileMe release being a nightmare. That happens to all companies one time or another. So, I don’t hold it against them for mail failing and all of the other problems that they had with the initial rollout. What I don’t like is that they made the conscious decision to sneak the MobileMe software onto people’s computers without informing them. This is much worse than the lame thing they did with Safari and Apple Update where they treated new software install as a regular update. At least you had the option if you knew to unselect it and then hide it so it wouldn’t ever get installed.
Apple is no better than realplayer when it comes to taking over your computer.

lol @ people who think apple is some sort of standard for ethical principles on how to run a corporation. HOOK LINE AND MOTHERFUCKING SINKER to you idiots.
Is there a particular reason you are using iTunes over an alternative that isn’t trying to pull sneaky tactics such as this? I deleted the newest iTunes for the same reason… I’m sick of installing one Apple program and it installing 5 other services along with it. I don’t need MobileMe. Not sure why I need Apple’s Bonjour service installed, or their shitty Auto Updater which tries to get me to install Safari for Windows

I’d recommend uninstalling iTunes and putting this in. Songbird will import your iTunes library (if you have both programs installed on Songbird’s first launch) and I’m pretty sure (not verified) that it will keep your MP3 players synched to that new library.

So you go out and get Quicktime and it tries to get you to install itunes.
Nothing is more useless to me then itunes.
So I get the install without it.

Then one day (like a day later) I get an automatic update for Quicktime, if I am not careful it bundles itunes with it.

Bullshit. Pisses me off.

So now I have itunes, quicktime and Safari all on my machine. And why are they there? Cause it is easier for me to let them install then cut them off at the pass every 2 weeks.

1. Make your product acceptably functional, extremely shiny, and totally incompatible with any products not also made by you.

2. Target an ad campaign at vacuous, shallow people with a need to be cool.

b. i dont feel like learning linux. i simply just dont care enough.

c. i use windows because i always have, and i downloaded it illegally. microsoft is a shitty company, whos days are numbered with unix and linux getting more popular.

you stated in your thread that you think apple is a good company. they arnt. they are there to make a profit from you idiots who will pay twice as much for something, simply because its shiny. they wanted to move their entire tech support department to india, but they didnt because they werent going to save enough money. point is, they wanted to. they are just like everyone else. stop sackriding.
LOL.
to you sir. Just download and installed it after reading your post and I love this program, only wish there was an equalizer. This is the program that has made me uninstall iTunes.
actually, i’m not a fan of apple. i’m just against fanboys and this forum is full of microsoft sack riders. when i talk to my friend who is an apple fanboy, i always give him shit about stuff they do.

i don’t own any apple products other than an iPod nano i bought a while ago for my wife and an iPod Touch i bought a few months ago. what i liked about the touch was the community support with the available hacks and shit.

what annoys me about people though is the utter hatred that some people have for apple. they put a lot of thought into usability, overall design and how you interact with their products. if there is any premium in their hardware (and there isn’t across the board), it is acceptable to many people to cover the design and usability that always seems to be an afterthought for companies like Microsoft, Dell, HP and all of the other Windows-centric computer companies. as far as the shitty things that Apple does, they don’t do anything better or worse than any other profit driven company.

the closest you’ll ever see to me being a fanboy is with HPUX and possibly HDS storage. i’d much rather deal with HDS and HPUX than EMC and Solaris any day.

Microsoft doesn’t steal employees and un-patented ideas, it buys companies whole and gets their patents along with them. It’s definitely more ethical, because it doesn’t put those people out of jobs and steal their big ideas.

Apple isn’t even a technology company anymore, they’re a marketing company — they don’t come up with any new ideas, they just market the ones they can turn the highest profit margin on. They’re the fucking GAP of electronics vendors, which is surprising, because they actually managed to steal the mantle from Sony, who at least develops their own shit.

I apptreciate the advice on getting around it. I never took the time to explore tools on it. Maybe I will do some uninstalls and do what you said.

But don’t let this excuse Apple from what they have done.
If Microsoft did the same thing with there software then every Apple fanatic with an axe to grind would be screaming at them.

It is unacceptable behavior to tie downloads together like that.
The comparison with Real software is a justifiable one.
I got some iPhone thing installed on my computer and I don’t have an iPhone.
Didnt Microsoft get sued because it always force installed windows media player? Will Apple get sued in the same way?

Wasnt it also not that long ago where iTunes started force installing Safari, and when they got caught, they had to add a check box which is checked on by default?

They likely won’t get sued. Microsoft has a natural monopoly in the OS market, which is legal because you can’t stop everyone from buying the same product if they all like it, but it used that to create artificial monopolies in the web browser and media player markets. Even so, technically it wasn’t the fact that Windows came with Media Player and Internet Explorer, it was the fact that they couldn’t be removed that got them in deep shit.

As far as I know, Apple neither has a monopoly in anything, nor do they prevent the user from removing those packaged "extras" without also removing the software the user wanted.

it was that plus the fact that Microsoft was using their monopoly to limit competition by threatening their resellers to not install competiters software.
I think Apples day is comming. They are suing a company that took OSX and modified it so it would work with off the shelf PC parts. A rather large legal firm has stepped in to repesent the small company and has already raised the issue of anti-trust violations by Apple based on the fact that they only allow their software to be installed on hardware they make.

i haven’t seen much other than the Safari and MobileMe sneakiness. i know a lot of Winders people have always had a bad feeling about apple because they don’t understand how someone could get so amped on a computer and OS. to most people, the PC is just a tool to use. so, to see these other people start talking in touchy feely ways about their computers is a bit off putting. i was like that for years and, though i still won’t buy an apple computer (mini too small, mac pro too insanely expensive and way too much power, iMac is perfect for me but i refuse to buy an all-in-one computer), i recognize why people like OSX and why they use it.
I recognize why people like OSX and giggle at some of the really delusional fanboys (same for Windows or Linux fanboys) but that doesn’t prevent me from having rather negative feelings about a lot of their tight-knit software installation annoyances and packages and their own anti-competitive behavior.

I don’t see much point getting amped over anything Apple because in my experience it’s just as flawed as the alternatives.

It is no doubt PSP is a great game player. But it is also a very good entertainment device which can be used for playing music. Assume you have some songs on your iTunes and are trying to figure out how to put them on your PSP. You copy and paste them in the PSP music folder, however, the PSP doesn’t recognize the songs as music at all. So what’s wrong? Don’t worry! This guide will help you out of the trouble.
The music downloaded from iTunes is under DRM protection. In order to play it on your PSP, you need to strip the DRM off and have the iTunes M4P M4A converted to PSP MP3 format. You can burn the protected M4P music files to CD-R or CD-RW disc to make an audio CD and then use some CD ripper software to convert the audio CD track back to PSP MP3. Also iTunes allows you to burn the protected music files to CD-R or CD-RW disc to make a standard audio CD:

1. Insert a CD-R or CD-RW disc into your CD-ROM drive. You’d better use CD-RW disc as it can be used for more than once.
2. Create a new playlist in iTunes. Add the protected songs to your playlist until you have 72 minutes of music. Click Edit and select Preferences. Select the Advanced tab. Tick the Audio CD option on the Burning tab. Click the Burn Disc button to make an audio CD.
Note: You cannot select the MP3 CD option since it requires the protected music files be converted to unprotected MP3 files.
3. After the audio CD is successfully burned, insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive again. Then you can use iTunes or Windows Media Player to import the music tracks on the burned disc to MP3 files.

Sounds a good idea! But it would be a time consuming process if you have a library of iTunes M4P music files ready to be converted to PSP MP3 for playback on your PSP. And it is a waste of CD discs. Moreover, the information about the M4P music files like title, artist and album will be lost after burning and ripping back to MP3 or WMA files. So this method is not recommended if you have a big collection of iTunes M4P music files ready to be transferred to your PSP.
Here, I would recommend using to convert iTunes M4P to PSP MP3. It applys the virtual CD burning technology to simulates the burning and ripping process. You just need to burn the iTunes M4P playlist to TuneClone virtual CD burner. Then TuneClone will directly convert the iTunes M4P music list to PSP MP3 for you. It is very fast and the information about each music song will be preserved perfectly. You can follow its the to learn how to convert iTunes DRM protected M4P music to PSP MP3.

After getting the output MP3 files by adopting either the burn-and-rip method or the way of using , now you can begin to transfer the MP3 files to your PSP:
1) Connect the PSP to your PC with a USB cable.
2) Press the "home" button on the PSP (it’s a tiny button to the lower left of the screen) then use the left-right directional buttons to find "Settings", then the up-down buttons to find "USB Connection" on the PSP.
3) Press the "X" button (you got it, the round button with the "X" on it) and your PSP should display "USB Connection".
4) In a moment or two your computer should tell you that a new USB device has been connected, then show you a new generic hard drive, usually E: or F:
5) Click on the drive letter that corresponds to the PSP unit.
6) Now create a new folder on that drive and name it "psp".
7) Within the new "psp" folder create another folder, and name it "music".
