help formatting external hdd to FAT32

I just bought a 500gb Verbatim external while it was with the intention of using it with my dvd player.
However, I am having a shitload of problems trying to format it to Fat32.
I tried on both vista and XP by running the cmd prompt. format /FS:FAT32 x:

Do you Ubuntu?

I recently installed Ubuntu on my Inspiron 1420 with a 1.8gHz C2D and 2gB DDR2.
I must say, I am loving it. I dont think I will boot into my Vista partition again except to use windows specific software.
Not only is Ubuntu more aesthetically pleasing because I didnt feel like paying out the ass [...]
