…I know OT can tell me…I’m not worried entirely about the amount of money I’m going to spend…Within reason of course…

HELP!
Consider a Sager, or an HP. Avoid notebooks with 8400M or 8600M GPUs.
big bucks. For sure. My 8400M struggles just to play action movies when hooked up to my 24" monitor.

Get the biggest, baddest MacBookPro there is and add in FinalCut Pro
Your school may require a mac for this, and they might want you to have specific features. Ask the film department for recommendations and find out whether they’re using Adobe, Avid, Final Cut, Sony, or something else. You should probably edit on the same program you’ll be editing on in their labs (if you ever need to). Or whatever the most popular program in the department is. That will probably decide for you whether you are getting a Mac or PC

My Uni gave me specific instructions about what to buy and what not to.

I guess I’ll be using photoshop and flash frequently. I’ll be starting with regular pictures right now and be moving over to video later on. So what do you think?!
Macbook pro. If you can get away with just getting a desktop get the mac pro tower!

Once you get into video you will be using Final Cut Pro (most likely). I’m sure you will have Adobe as well. Most of the visual arts schools have you buy a MAC if possible.
I agree, anything Adobe you can run on both PC and Mac. Desktop speed > laptop speed if you’re not going to be moving it around.

You probably will be using FCP for editing, which is only for Macs.

I think you should check wiht your school what the minimum specs they require are. It’s possible you don’t need a nice computer because you can/will be editing in their lab, or on the contrary they may want a specific model. Once you find that info out, we can recommend you a computer.

But, if they don’t have very good guidelines or minimum specifications and you’re willing to spend some money, just go with what popsnbeer said

…I know OT can tell me…I’m not worried entirely about the amount of money I’m going to spend…Within reason of course…

what school are you going to? A buddy of mine is finishing up his B.A. digital cinema arts/production this year, from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
