By the way, I noticed the problem while streaming video from my laptop to my XBox360. Every so often the connection will drop. I opened the Network and Sharing Center in the control panel and I saw the icon for the network connection change right before the connection dropped.
are you using an old or cheap router, it may be dying on you

the router is a bit old. it is a linksys wrt54gl v1.1 router running DD-WRT v23 SP2 (pretty old firmware). i think i’m going to try flashing it with the v24 SP1 firmware to see if that helps.
I have Vista Home Basic on my laptop. The only issue I had for a while, was it would connect to the network, but local only. It wouldnt connect to the internet. I ended up resetting the router after a day or so of fucking with it, and it worked again.

My router will also "forget" all the port forwarding options every week or so, which requires a reset to fix. Old routers definitely have a big effect. Im running a version 2 Linksys WRT54G. At least 3 years old.
Some routers just don’t play nice with the IPv6 protocol, so go into your network settings and turn everything related to IPv6 off.

A friend of mine told me my wireless connection and cordless phones might be sharing the same megahertz. Could that be the problem?

If so, how do i fix it?

yep. they don’t have to be on the exact same frequency to cause interference, so it’s a pretty common occurrence.

the phone should have a "channel" button to change frequencies slightly, but I don’t know how long it remembers the currently selected channel, so..

log into router firmware, go to wireless settings. look for a "Channel" option and change it to a different value between 1 and 11. just change it to the opposite end of that range from what it currently is. ex; if it’s 3, change it to 8, 9 to 2, 4 to 10, etc

My sister was over this weekend with her laptop, and she used my Internet while she was here. She never got knocked off, so I guess that is the problem.

Probably a very noob question…but how do I log onto my router firmware? I bring up my internet status menu, but I didn’t see a channel setting.

should be it. the default user name and password should be "admin"

open your internet browser and go to 192.168.1.1
try a blank username and password of admin

then go back and do what I said before

Make/Model of your router?

on that screen, go to Support and look up your IP.. whatever the IP is.. change the last number to a 1 and try that in the browser (or look for the Gateway IP and just try that)

It’s a 2WIRE through AT&T.

The Gateway IP seemed to do the trick.

I was on a channel 1, but I changed it to an 11, and I’m still getting knocked off when the phone rings.

I might just try each channel and see what happens. Here’s a list of the available channels…

that may not fix his problem. 5.8ghz phones still use 2.4ghz for some stuff, and 2.4ghz is still overcrowded with microwave ovens, bluetooth, and 802.11b/g/n.

This is true. Are you in an area where your neighbor’s phones might be fucking your shit up? Keep trying all those channels, I guess.

If anything, you can try the 5.8ghz phone. If it doesn’t work, you can always return it. Buy from Best Buy or some other store -their return policy is really liberal

I guess I will try a new phone, and go from there.
