Windows and S.M.A.R.T monitoring

Does Vista or XP have any built in support for monitoring SMART on harddrives? Or do you need a utility?

Most decent ones I see are $. Are there any good free ones that can send an email alert when a problem is detected?
run spinrite on your drive every couple of weeks > smart

smart is good at telling you that something failed, not that something is failing
SMART isn’t very reliable at detecting failures, unfortunately. Like < 50%. The failures you really care about are the slow ones, one segment at a time, that SMART never hears about.

But yeah, you prolly knew that.
SpinRite has problems with some SATA drives / controllers, maybe 6.1 will fix them but they aren’t releasing it. I had it corrupt 2 SATA drives that were working fine.

Luckly they were test computers, and I was just trying out spinrite on them.
HDTune is free and does a good job of showing SMART info plus can benchmark the drive.

I hate SpeedFan, it never shows the right temps and fan speeds anyway.

speedfan can send email alerts (which is what he wants)
HDtune does not
